Crypto for a better climate: a metaverse character to save the planet

International Group Of Coders And Activists Release NFT For Nature

California - Jan, 07th 2022

With the hype around NFTs (non-fungible tokens) as digital certificates for art, a kind of gold rush has swept through the internet. Big names and big players like Eminem, Samsung and even Melania Trump jumped the bandwagon to generate income on the blockchain with that technology. Some of them try to attach some aspect of charity to their activities.

Less prominent, but much more successful players when it comes to charity, are barely mentioned in the mainstream press. Anonymous donor and NFT collector "pranksy" for example has raised millions of US$ for charity causes in the past months and is a beacon for the envolabs plan to raise money for nature.

In February 2022, the international group of coders and activists (called envolabs) around German online pionieer and e-commerce specialist Ralf Schwoebel will release a NFT to support climate saving projects.

This "NFT drop" is interesting for 3 reasons:

  1. Non-Anonymous: Envolabs as a group is publicly led by well-known business entrepreneurs with a solid track record, spanning 26 years of serious and reputable business practices. Most NFT drops in the past have been done anonymously.
  2. NFT buyers will vote, where the money is spent: When buyers hold an NFT token in their wallet, they can log in to the envolabs website and vote how the income will be distributed among selected climate projects. The crypto-scene calls this a "DAO", a decentralized autonomous organization.
  3. The envolabs NFT is "metaverse ready": The envolabs group created 10,000 unique 3D characters that can be imported and used in online games and 3D worlds. Commonly known as the "metaverse" as it was coined in the groundbreaking novel "Snow Crash" by Neal Stephenson and stands for 3D worlds like "The Sandbox", "Decentraland" or Metas (ex-Facebook) platform "Horizon".
Crypto currency specialist Danish Kiani says: "I started to dive into the cryptocurrency world in 2017 and made enough money to live a good life, but the climate change is endangering that life for all of us. We joined together to fight climate change with real money and our coming NFT drop is just the beginning of that journey."

An NFT drop of that size is already producing tons of carbon and the group pledges to compensate that thousand-fold. Envolabs announced that 70% of all NFT income will be funneled into carbon neutralizing projects and the advancement of technology for better blockchain efficiency. The rest will stay in the Ethereum blockchain to support the development of the blockchain towards carbon neutrality.
